Grad School and Why do we learn?

Most psychology majors want to go grad school because it will open up new possibilities with new jobs. I went to Psychology Society tonight and we talked about applications and how to prepare for graduate school. My friend was there and she started freaking out saying that grad school was impossible.

It made me think about the reality of grad school. I still have plenty of time before I start applying but its good to have a clear vision of reality. She said that Grad school was really hard. It was time demanding. You have classes with reading assignments all day everyday. You are never done learning. There is always something new to learn. You have to stay on top of all the current studies and be aware of different scientists. Grad school scares me a little bit. I have to prepare for the GRE. I need experience with a internship and research experience. The thing that excites me now is the fact that I choose what I want to research. I can choose any advisor and then work under them while writing my thesis. I have so many open doors to research about family effects from pornography. I know that pornography is a touchy subject right now, but I am interested in learning about the effects that it can have on marriages and children.

I can't wait to further continue my education after getting my bachelor's degree. The things you learn in college are mainly values. All my classes that I have taken, each lesson is forgotten but the important lessons are remained. Since my two years of college, these are the main things that I have learned.

1. Learning is Fun. You can chose what you want to learn and then make your life and education how you want it.
2. Learning is Hard Work. It takes time, dedication, sacrifice, money and motivation.
3. How do we learn? We learn how we each personally learn and apply knowledge. The beautiful thing about learning is everyone has a different style of learning. We each can teach each other with our unique styles.
4. Learning is not for the weak heart, It takes a good heart with strong desires and passion. You can't have your heart halfway in your effort. It takes time and desire. A combination of rationalism and empiricism. We need experience and logic in order to discover truth.
5. The nerds in high school were the losers. The nerds in college are the cool kids because they succeed and they find passion through knowledge. Now, today my Personality teacher wore slippers with freud on them. Yes, I think they were awesome. I wanted a pair of them. Maybe, we don't have to be that extreme in our nerdiness like me. Maybe we don't need to want chicken to train with positive and negative reinforcement. But, the nerds will end up with the good paychecks. So all of you people like me who like to learn, yes you are a nerd then. It will pay off the in the end. Don't give up your nerdiness for popularity.

Anyways, this blog has gone all over the place. I just have learned a lot in college and I hope that everyone realizes that learning is a life long process that should be continued everyday. Don't ever give up on learning.
