Its all about me.
I am currently taking a class called LDS Perspectives and Psychology. I have a good feeling about this class. Number one, we don't have final exams. We only have papers. Number two, I love his teaching style. I just love how his main objective is to make us think instead of think only with the textbook's point of view. I think the hardest thing about teaching is encouraging students to think but giving students textbooks to think. Think outside the textbook! This teacher makes you do that.
We had a good discussion about altruism in the classroom. I have always heard about altruism and thought about being 100% altruistic. Is it possible to do everything for everyone else? A lot of theorist say that you do things for yourself but have altruistic moments. Is that true? I kinda believe that. Only Christ has had the power to do everything for everyone else on this earth. Ultimately, we will become like Christ and become completely altruistic. On this earth, I don't think it is possible. If it is, it is extremely hard. Did Christ do the atonement for selfish reasons? Did he do it to receive glory? I don't think so. He thought of everyone's sins while doing and thinking about helping others receive mercy through the atonement. I think it is amazing. I haven't really had a psychology class that has incorporated the gospel that much, so I am excited for me to explore my testimony in this class. I can explore my testimony in a academic setting.
The point of the conversation was how we are about ourselves in college. We think of ourselves. How are we doing? What is our grade point average? What can I do better to get into grad school? Why I am not going on dates? Why am I....Do you see the pattern? I. Everything is so selfish. I don't understand why we are made to be selfish. We are encouraged to be selfish in college. Think about yourself and be ambitious. We are rewarded to be selfish and do things that are great. In a classroom, we want others to do worse because that means we can get better grades with the curve. if we were truly Christlike, then we would want others to succeed as well. We wouldn't hope others would do bad on the exam, we would study with others and pray for them to do well on the exam. If you were in college or are in college, did you have the attitude of wanting others to do well? If so, I admire you. You are my new hero because I want to be like you.
I want to be less selfish. I am going into a profession to help people. This is my main goal. He started asking us about how we are going into a helping profession but what is our main motivation. Do we really care about others? Do we get a personal satisfaction that makes us do it? Are we happy from our profession? It made me think of my reasons for going into my profession. Am I doing it for them or for me? What if I changed my life to do things for others more and less for me? How would my life be different? What would it look like? What would yours like?

Hey you don't know me but I graduated from BYU a few years ago. I heard about the "LDS Perspectives on Psychology" (and via google searches I found that I think you took the class?) recently and I really want to hear the lectures ... but like I said, I'm no longer at BYU. Did you by chance make audio recordings of the lectures when you took it?? Or do you remember anybody else that was in your class that I could contact with the same question? You can contact me at thejcmartin@gmail.com
