I am going to write about the Conflict Mediation Process. I was a conflict mediator in High School and the process has helped me many times in my life.
There are some basics that we must go over first.
1. When mediating conflict, the mediator must be neutral.
2. Individuals must be respectful of what others say and take turns talking.
3. Both sides must be willing to try to understand the other side.
4. Understand that it can be heated, so be prepared to intervene when needed.
What is the process?
Before the meeting, make time for both parties to have face to face meeting.
1. Establish Rules and basic outline of the meeting.
2. Allow one side of the story to be told.
3. Allow the opposing side of the story to be told.
4. Allow Joint Discussion with Supervision
5. Find solution for both parties.
For solutions, It is hard to have a win-win solution. That will be rare because both parties might not want to work together. The most common solution is a compromise. You don't want to have a win-lose or lose-win. You will aim for a win-win but end up with a compromise.
6. Set Next appointment to make sure that conflict is Resolved.
One thing to remember is just because they say the conflict is over, the problem can be relapsed over time due to certain circumstances. So, make sure to set up a another date or follow up on the problem in order to finalize the solution. You may need to restart the process after the problem is relapsed.
With my experience in conflict mediation, I have learned that when the individuals are nominated by friends, they are less likely to work with you. When they understand their conflict, they are more likely to work and change. I have learned that conflicts are due to relationships, pride, and silly past issues that people haven't forgotten. I find this process to be very important and applicable to everyone! So use it instead of bottling up problems and frustrations :)
